The Doppler Effect describes the change in frequency of a wave (sound or light) as the source and observer move relative to each other. Waves emitted by an object traveling toward an observer get compressed, prompting a higher frequency, as the source approaches the observer. Likewise, waves emitted by a source traveling away from an observer get stretched out. The effect causes the sudden change in pitch noticeable in a passing siren, as well as the red shift seen by astronomers.
The Doppler bookcase takes inspiration from the above principle by placing its vertical supports at varying distances from each other, referencing a wave source speeding up and then slowing down relative to an observer.
